在美國 toilet 指的是「馬桶」或「便器」，因此美國人認為說 toilet 是沒禮貌的，只有在一些標示上才會出現toilet。加拿大人也不會說go to the toilet。

在英國，toilet就是廁所，大部分場合都使用toilet這個字，也不會被認為不文雅或沒禮貌。
